How to Apply for Medical Laboratory Technology

The Medical Laboratory Technology program at EFSC has limited seating. Up to twelve students will be selected to start during the fall or spring semesters. All applicants must be current EFSC students who have completed the main college application process before applying to the Medical Laboratory Technology Program. Admission into the Medical Laboratory Technology program follows the application steps below, with admission then guided by a selection criteria point system. Interested students are required to attend an Open House. For dates and times, please see the "Open House" Tab on the Medical Lab Tech homepage.

Advisement

Students are required to visit a Health Sciences Advisor for guidance in planning a schedule for completing prerequisite courses and any remaining support courses prior to admission into the program.

Verify EFSC General Admissions Status (Current, New, or Returning)

Students must be current students at Eastern Florida State College before they can apply to the Medical Laboratory Technology progam. 

NEW STUDENTS: For students new to EFSC, complete the EFSC online application for admission prior to the Medical Laboratory Technology program application deadline. There is a $30 non-refundable application fee that must be paid before the application can be processed.

Please note that applications are processed in the order they were received and application processing time may take up to seven days. Check your email frequently for your acceptance letter.

In addition, new EFSC students need to

  • Submit official High School Transcripts (or GED scores) to General Admissions.
  • Submit official transcripts from any and all colleges attended prior to EFSC (if applicable)
  • Provide FL Residency documentation, complete the New Student Orientation, and finalize any other EFSC General Admissions requirements.

RETURNING STUDENTS: Returning/readmit students who have not completed a course in the past year must also re-apply online.  There is no application fee for a readmit application. Readmit Students need to

  • Submit official transcripts from any and all colleges attended since their last enrollment at EFSC (if applicable).
  • Provide FL Residency documentation, and complete any other EFSC General Admissions requirements.

CURRENT STUDENTS: Current Students may move on to the next step.

Complete the Online Application for Medical Lab. Tech. Program

Complete the online Health Sciences Institute Application for Medical Laboratory Technology by the application deadline, after you have become an EFSC student.

The application deadlines are:

November 1 - Spring Term Start in January each year
June 1 - Fall Term Start in August each year

There is a $25 non-refundable fee for each program application. This fee must be paid online or at the cashier's office before the application deadline.

An UNOFFICIAL copy of each and every college transcript is required with Health Science application. Unofficial EFSC transcripts can be accessed from myGPS or FloridaShines.org

Transcripts from other colleges must be received and evaluated by the application deadline.  Please be aware that this process can take up to three weeks.

REQUIRED prerequisite and support courses


The following general education courses must be completed prior to enrollment into major core courses:

 Any  Humanities requirement 3
 Any  Social/Behavioral Science requirement 3


Prior to enrollment into MLT major courses, students must successfully complete the prerequisite courses of General Biology, Intro to Biotechnology, and General Chemistry 1 & 2.

Beginning in 2020, students must be enrolled or have completed BSCC 1426, Introduction to Biotechnology Methods by the November 1, 2020 deadline.

Students must also hold a GPA of 2.5 or higher.

MANDATORY Student Open House

Students are required to attend a MLT Student Open House prior to their first semester in the MLT program. The Open House for the upcoming Fall Term 2021 application will be held on Wednesday, April 28, 2021 with two sessions from 10 AM to noon or 1 to 3 PM. Due to COVID restrictions an Open House RSVP is required. Students should bring  an unofficial copy of their transcript from every college they've attended. All students should successfully complete the programmatic prerequisites, and demonstrate the ability to attend college full-time.

Submit Application Materials

Submit the following application materials via email to the health science admissions office at healthscience@easternflorida.edu before the application deadline:

  1. Unofficial transcripts from EFSC and all colleges attended
  2. Essay - 1 page, typed on the topic "Why is Medical Laboratory Technology My Career Choice?"
  3. Work Experience Form (if applicable)
  4. Proof of Military service (if applicable)
  5. Advising Card (if applicable)
  6. Open House Card (if applicable)
  7. 2 letters of recommendation
  8. Online application and $25 fee paid
