Diagnostic Medical Sonography: Selection Point System

Admission Selection Criteria for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Associate in Science Degree program is based on a point system, as part of the admissions process. After the May 15 application deadline has passed, committee members carefully tabulate and confirm points accumulated by each applicant.

Diagnostic Medical Sonography Point System

Grade Point Average

Applicants must have at least a 2.5 GPA by the application deadline to apply to the program. 

Health Education/Related Work Experience

Applicants may receive points in ONLY ONE of the following categories:

Graduate with an Associate in Arts degree, Associate in Science degree, or an Associate in Applied Science degree from a regionally accredited institution  1
Military Service - two years or more  1
Work: One year of full-time equivalent work in a healthcare position during the last two years, involving direct patient care  2   
Graduate of a Health Science/Nursing program - Two semesters or more, with NO recent experience in direct patient care
Graduate of a Health Sciences/Nursing Program of any length WITH 6 months full-time work experience within the last two years involving direct patient care  3
Graduate with a Bachelor's or Master's degree in any field from a regionally accredited institution  3

Virtual Information Session

Each applicant will receive 5 points for completing the virtual  information session

Health Science Advising Session

Applicants who have completed an advisement session with a Health Sciences Advisor, as evidenced by a signed advisement card, will receive 4 points. This card can only be obtained from a Health Science Student Advisor, and no duplicates will be issued. The card is only valid for 1 year after the issue date.


The Diagnostic Medical Sonography program requires that prospective sonography students complete the following observation requirement. Students must spend two, 4-hour observation days within our Sonography Skills Laboratory. 

All Observational/shadowing assignments must be arranged through Eastern Florida State College‚Äôs Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program. After the second observation period, students will be interviewed by the Program Manager. You must bring a resume with you to share with the Program Manager.  Observations should be done early in the application process.

Specific College Course Work Bonus Points

If completed by the application deadline, applicants can earn the following points for the  courses below:  An "A" is worth 5 points, a "B" is worth 3 points and a "C" is worth 1 point.

Sciences: If completed within five (5) years of the application deadline, the following science courses will result in points:

  • General Biology (with lab)
  • Anatomy & Physiology I (with lab)
  • Anatomy & Physiology II (with lab)
  • Physics

General Education Prerequisite (No year requirement)

College Algebra (or Higher)

Health Science Electives: One point will be given for the completion ("C" or better) of the following courses. (No year requirement)

  • Medical Terminology
  • Introduction to Healthcare

Bonus Course for Points:  Students who take Patho-physiology and Pharmacology (HSC 1554) with a "C" or better before the application deadline will receive two bonus points.  This course is not required for graduation but could greatly benefit the student while in the program.

A typed, one-page essay on the topic of "Why I am Choosing Diagnostic Medical Sonography as a Career" will result in 2 points.

TEAS Test Scores

As an entrance requirement, all applicants must take the TEAS  Test (Test of Essential Academic Skills) and will require a Reading Comprehension score of 65% and an Adjusted Individual Total (overall) score of 60% to be considered for program admission.

The TEAS test may be taken twice for application consideration into the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program by the application deadline. If the TEAS test is taken twice, the highest score from each section will be collated. Test scores are valid for 2 years. Eastern Florida State College's Testing Center only allows the TEAS to be taken once on site during an application year. If a student needs to retest during the same year, they will need to find an alternate testing site or test via a remote option. No points will be awarded for TEAS.

Volunteering / Service Learning

Volunteering Experience

Interested students may earn 5 points by volunteering in the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program as an ultrasound model for scanning by the Sonography majors and by exploring other opportunities that would jointly benefit the student and the program.

      • Completion of 20 hours of volunteering in the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program.
      • Students must purchase and wear program-specific scrubs (color: wine).
      • Students must complete a project that is both beneficial for the students and the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program. The type of project to be completed is to be determined by both the student and the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program Manager prior to the start of the experience.

Repeat Applicants

If an applicant applied, paid and submitted TEAS scores and had at least 30 points in their previous year's application, but was not accepted, they will be awarded 4 points toward the next year's application. Applicants must have requested that their folder be held over. Students are also encouraged to see a health science advisor to discuss how to improve their chances of getting in at the next year.
